Dean McLaughlin

Dean Benjamin McLaughlin, Jr. (born July 22, 1931 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American science fiction writer.

Life

McLaughlin is the son of astronomer Dean Benjamin McLaughlin and Laura McLaughlin, née Hill. He studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1953 .

His first SF story For Those Who Follow After appeared in Astounding in 1951 . In the meantime he has written around three dozen short stories and 4 novels, one of which ( Im Schatten der Venus , 1965) has also been translated into German. A topic he has dealt with several times is the conflict between the mostly libertarian individual and an authoritarian state power. With the stories Dawn (1981), Ode to Joy (1991) and Tenbrook of Mars (2008) published in the SF magazine Analog , he was each winner in the Analog Readers Poll of the following year.
