Dean Benjamin McLaughlin

Dean Benjamin McLaughlin (born October 25, 1901 in Brooklyn , New York , † December 8, 1965 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American astronomer .

McLaughlin was a professor of astronomy at the University of Michigan . In 1954 he put forward the theory that there are volcanoes on Mars whose eruptions are responsible for the crater landscapes. A Martian crater and a lunar crater were named after him, as was the asteroid (2024) McLaughlin .

McLaughlin is one of the namesake of the Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect and the father of science fiction writer Dean Benjamin McLaughlin, Jr.
