history

The Catholic community in Baku had its origins in 1882 when a small chapel was built.

Old church

In 1894 the Catholic community received permission to build a church. This took place between 1909 and 1912 in the neo-Gothic style. In 1938 the church was completely destroyed.

New Church

In 1997 the Roman Catholic community in Baku was brought back to life. In 2002 she was given a piece of land to build a church. In 2006 a building in the modern style was built, with neo-Gothic elements being included. The plans were provided by the Italian architect Paolo Ruggiero . The sculpture of the Virgin Mary was created by the Azerbaijani artist Husein Achverdiev , while the stained glass is by the Azerbaijani artist Zohrab Mutallibov . On April 26, 2007, the papal nuncio Claudio Gugerotti blessed the new church, which, like the old church, bears the name Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

The Catholic community used to be under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Administration of the Caucasus , which originally comprised the three Caucasian states of Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan . The administration or apostolic administration of the Caucasus was founded on December 30, 1993 with the decree Quo aptius from the diocese of Tiraspol .

On October 11, 2000, the administration lost the Azerbaijani territory in favor of the establishment of the Mission sui juris Baku . The local ordinary Giuseppe Pasotto has been CSS since it was founded . The Mission sui juris Baku was established on October 11, 2000 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Administration of the Caucasus and thus the Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture with its seat in Baku.

The first Apostolic Prefect, Vladimir Fekete SDB, was raised to the rank of bishop in December 2017.
