Creation is a British biography about Charles Darwin from 2009. The film was directed by Jon Amiel . Based on Randal Keynes ' novel Annie's Box , the film fuses historical facts with fictitious things.

action

The British natural scientist Charles Darwin is a young father who lives in an idyllic English village. He is a sensitive and intelligent man who has a very good relationship with his daughter Annie. She is ten years old, very intelligent and interested. Charles teaches his daughter the basics of science. He also talks about his theory of evolution and his travels.

Darwin's daughter repeats her father's thoughts to a priest who punishes her with corporal punishment. Darwin is outraged by this behavior, while his wife Emma defends the priest. In the following sermons, the priest refers to Darwin and speaks aggressively about the Christian idea of creation. Charles, who goes to church regularly, feels attacked.

After his trip with the HMS Beagle, Darwin is working on the summary of his work “ On the Origin of Species ”. He has problems with the fact that his wife Emma is deeply religious and sees an attack on religion in his mind. Emma is afraid for Charles' salvation and that he will end up in hell.

Annie falls ill and dies early. Afterwards there is an estrangement between Charles and Emma and the conjugal love life also comes to a standstill. After Darwin finishes his manuscript, he receives support from Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomas Henry Huxley . Huxley notes with satisfaction that Darwin killed God.

After Darwin received a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858, he realized that he had come to the same conclusions in parallel with him. Due to the time pressure and the urging of his friends, Darwin is working on the publication of his work. The mourning for their daughter finally unites the couple and Emma supports Charles.

Finally Charles completes the work "On the Origin of Species" and gives it to the postman to send to the publisher. Without knowing which influential work he is transporting, the postman moves on. The final scene shows Darwin with the figure of his daughter.
