Major Leonard Darwin (born January 15, 1850 at Down House in Downe , † March 26, 1943 in London ) was a British soldier , politician , economist , eugenicist and mentor of Ronald Aylmer Fisher .

Leonard Darwin was the fourth son of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and his wife Emma Wedgwood (1808-1896).

biography

His parents sent him to the Clapham School in 1862 , and from 1871 he went to the Royal Military Engineering School. Between 1877 and 1882 he worked for the War Ministry. Leonard Darwin also took part in a number of scientific expeditions, including the Venus Transit in 1874 and 1882. From 1892 to 1895 he was a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Unionist Party for the Lichfield District in Staffordshire .

Leonard Darwin was married twice, first marriage (1882) to Elizabeth Frances Fraser († 1898) and second marriage to his cousin (first degree) Charlotte Mildred Massingberd (1868-1940). Both marriages remained childless.
