William Golding, 1983

Sir William Gerald Golding (born September 19, 1911 in St. Columb Minor , Cornwall , † June 19, 1993 in Perranarworthal , Cornwall) was a British writer and Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1983.

Artistic creation

Golding began writing at the age of seven. Reluctantly, he began studying science , but rebelled against it and eventually shifted his major to English literature. Even a year before his graduation in science and English at Oxford Brasenose College published his first book of poems. Golding was 23 years old at the time. From 1939 he taught English in Salisbury . His artistic work was interrupted by his participation as a naval officer in World War II . The war experiences were formative for his further work. In 1961, the income from his successful books enabled him to quit teaching. After a year as writer-in-residence at Hollins College in Virginia, he became a freelance writer.

In his novels, Golding explores metaphysical foundations of existence, such as survival, guilt , atonement , redemption, in symbolic - allegorical form . His manuscripts were not in great demand at first; his later biggest success, The Lord of the Flies, was rejected by more than twenty publishers, but in 1954 this story appeared about the experiences of a group of stranded students and became a bestseller in Great Britain and the USA . His other books could not follow up on this success.

William Golding died in 1993 at the age of 81. His final resting place is located in the churchyard of the village Bowerchalke the county Wiltshire .
