Johannes Vilhelm Jensen

Johannes Vilhelm Jensen (born January 20, 1873 in Farsø , Jutland , † November 25, 1950 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish writer and winner of the 1944 Nobel Prize for Literature .

Life

Johannes V. Jensen grew up as the child of a veterinarian with nine siblings in the heavenly village of Farsø. One of his sisters was Thit Jensen , writer and champion for the emancipation of women.

Jensen studied medicine , but never did the job. Even during his studies he wrote adventure and decadence novels . After long journeys and stays in the USA , Great Britain and France as a journalist, Jensen found his literary style. His life-affirming optimism soon became instrumental in modern Danish literature. Influences from Walt Whitman and Rudyard Kipling are characteristic of Jensen's poems. The influence of Charles Darwin flows into Jensen's novel cycle The Long Journey , which depicts the development of Nordic man up to the 15th century. He moved on the verge of racism.

Honors

In December 1944 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature "for the rare strength and fertility of his poetic imagination, combined with a comprehensive intellect and bold creative style," so the reasoning of the Nobel Committee. Previously, no Nobel Prize for Literature had been awarded in the war years since 1940.

The Johannes-V.-Jensen-Land in Greenland is named after him.

In 1999 the novel Kongens Fald (1901, German 1912: The King's Fall ) was voted “Danish Book of the Century” by readers of the major Danish daily newspapers .
