Hawking - The Search for the Beginning of Time (Original title: Hawking ) is a BBC- produced biopic about the British physicist Stephen Hawking from 2004 .

The young and highly talented physics student Stephen Hawking is diagnosed with the devastating nerve disease ALS . Doctors fear that he will only have a few years before he can no longer control his body and will slowly die. With the support of his parents, friends and girlfriend Jane Wild, he tries to realize his lifelong dream and solve a major astrophysical problem. Together with Roger Penrose , he finally succeeds in producing a general proof of the necessary existence of singularities in the general theory of relativity, which was largely developed by Albert Einstein .
