Phoebe Sarah Nicholls (born April 7, 1957 in London , England ) is a British actress .

life and career

Phoebe Nicholls was born to the actor couple Anthony Nicholls and Faith Kent. As a result, she got into acting early and made her film debut in 1964 at the side of Anne Bancroft and Peter Finch in bedroom dispute. In the following years she took on other film appearances such as alongside Vincent Price in The Death Cards of Dr. Schreck (1965), but only during the school holidays, as her father wanted a decent education. After school, she completed her acting training at the Central School of Speech and Drama .

She had one of her first adult roles in David Lynch's The Elephant Man , where she played the mother of the title character in a very small role. Subsequently, her role offers increased, she was particularly often seen in literary adaptations, costume films and historical strips. She took on the role of Cordelia Flyte in the famous television film Reunion with Brideshead (1981) based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh , in Maurice (1987) she played the wife of Hugh Grant's homosexual character, directed by James Ivory , and in Jane Austen's Seduction ( 1995) she was seen as Elizabeth Elliott, older sister of the main character. From the 1990s she was mostly for British television productions like in front of the camera, around 2012 and again in 2014 for Downton Abbey as the impoverished noblewoman Susan MacClare .

In addition, Nicholls has had a successful career as a stage actress, which began in 1978 with her stage debut at the West End under the direction of Michael Lindsay-Hogg in Whose Life Is It Anyway? started. Since then she has played many times in productions at the Royal National Theater . In 2009 she received a Clarence Derwent Award for her appearances in Harley Granville-Barkers Waste and Noël Cowards The Vortex .

She has been married to the director and screenwriter Charles Sturridge since 1985 , with whom she has already made several productions. The two have three children together, Tom , Arthur and Matilda Sturridge, who are also all actors.
