The murder plot

Late atonement (original title: Expiation ) is the fourth episode of the crime series Lewis - Der Oxford Krimi .

action

Rachel Mallory, mother of two daughters, is found hanged by her husband, the ophthalmologist Hugh Mallory. The young Dr. Hook, representing forensic doctor Hobson, recognizes a classic case of suicide at the scene .

Although Lewis' boss Innocent sees the case as closed, Lewis and Hathaway set off on their own and come to Professor La Plassiter, who will die in a few days of aggressive cancer. In addition, the law professor, who also worked for the government, went blind some time ago. He forces the criminal investigators into a "deal": they should first find his "old childhood sweetheart", a certain Stoker, a former student whom he had relentlessly expelled from university. In return, he will give a hint in the case of Rachel Mallory. So Hathaway brings the mentally unstable George Stoker to La Plassiter, whereupon he sends him to Jane Templeton. When Lewis and Hathaway arrive at their house, they notice a car in the locked garage with the engine running: Jane Templeton is sitting in the vehicle into which the exhaust fumes are directed; she is dead.

Hobson returns home from vacation and examines both Mallory and Templeton. Templeton was suffocated and then put in her car, Mallory was strangled and then hung. Stephanie Fielding, the Mallory's neighbor, also helps Lewis by sending him to see Hugh's mother, Eleanor. Lewis now clarifies this about astonishing background: Two married couples, the Haywards and the Mallorys, the men partners in an ophthalmologist's practice, spent a momentous vacation in Madagascar. At the time, Hugh Mallory was married to Louise and had two (very young) sons; the dominant David Hayward had two daughters with his wife Rachel. During this vacation a partner swap took place step by step; allegedly, Hugh threaded it so that he and his friend "swapped" their wives for good, with the women each keeping their children. This family assignment then remained until the present.

Then the dying Prof. La Plassiter almost clears up the case: When many years ago a certain Allison Bride was supposed to take care of her little brother alone and who scratched his face until it was sore, 9-year-old Allison cut the toddler hands off. Later she tried to sew her hands back on. The child Allison Bride, of course, could not be held criminally responsible; it got a new identity as Rachel Mallory and a clandestine state guardian - Jane Templeton. Years later, she had contacted Rachel Mallory and confronted her with her past. Rachel's "first husband", David Hayward, had learned of the dark secret while on their honeymoon; after that he kept an eye on Rachel because of their children. Nobody else knew.

Finally, the following picture emerges: Hugh Mallory got a visit from Jane Templeton that day, right after she had been to Rachel. Hugh stormed home from his office to Rachel. This confirmed her real identity as the Allison Bride and also explained to him that David Hayward had arranged the exchange of wives on that vacation because he no longer wanted to live with her - a possibly dangerous woman. In his anger, Hugh Mallory first killed his wife and then hanged her in the house, and later also killed the informant Jane Templeton.

Lewis and Hathaway are finally able to catch Hugh and his foster daughters Anna and Izzie in a museum just before one last drama takes place on the upper floor, as Hugh is ready to throw himself out the window and acts accordingly. Lewis is slightly injured, Hugh Mallory is kept alive. The episode, which featured many astonishing constellations, ends with a sermon by Innocent for her two subordinates, especially because of the procedure in the museum.

Reviews

"Detective game with style and a little slant."

"To cheer on - strong."

Both reviews mention that there is no place for humor in this dark story and that this episode is particularly poor in action, apart from the finale in the museum. Instead, there is a brief history of the relationship between Lewis and the aforementioned neighbor against the background that her son might know who came to the neighboring house at the time of the crime. Another link arises right at the beginning through Hathaway's problems with his contact lenses, which is why he goes to the ophthalmologist Hugh Mallory. This morning scene at the police office is the only moment of very dry humor and illuminates the relationship between Lewis and Hathaway: Lewis is amazed that Hathaway is in tears. He explains that he will cry every day when he has to be with Lewis.

The rather uncommon word of the English title, "Expiation", means atonement .
