Barrington Pheloung

Barrington Somers Pheloung (born May 10, 1954 in Sydney , † July 31, 2019 in Australia ) was an Australian composer of ballet , film and chamber music . From 1972 he lived in England . His surname Pheloung is of Huguenot origin.

Life

Barrington Pheloung was born in Sydney's Manly neighborhood . At the age of 18 he moved to London to study guitar. He was taught by John Williams and Julian Bream at the Royal College of Music , where he also studied composition and conducting. In 1977 he won a scholarship to take a course in composition and choreography at the University of Surrey . In his second year of study, he was commissioned to compose a ballet. Since then he has written the music for over 50 English and international ballet productions.

The sons Anthony, Danny and Timmy and the daughter Adel result from the marriage with Heather Pheloung. He died in his home in Australia.

Musical creation

Best known are his cover stories on the television series Inspector Morse, Oxford Homicide and The Young Inspector Morse . In 1992 he received a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award (Best Original Television Music) for Inspector Morse . For his work on the film Hilary & Jackie he was also nominated for a BAFTA (Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music) in 1999. This was followed by further work for films such as Wie crazy and from the bottom of my heart , in which he also appears briefly. In 1994 he wrote the music for the film Nostradamus and for the 1995 Stephen King film version The Mangler , he was also active as a composer. In 2005 he composed the music for Shopgirl , followed in 2007 by The Time That We Still Remain .

He also wrote the soundtrack for the computer games In Cold Blood and Baphomets Fluch and Baphomets Fluch 2 .

In addition to his work in film and television, Barrington Pheloung also wrote for the theater. So he wrote u. a. the music for the West End songs Made in Bangkok by Anthony Minghella and After the Fall by Arthur Miller . He has also composed for the London Contemporary Dance Theater and for events such as the opening of the Millennium Dome .
