action

The film begins with Nina's life after the death of her friend Jamie, who died unexpectedly of a simple sore throat. Nina tries to cope with her grief over his sudden death, but Jamie is always present in her life. She thinks of him day and night, even talks to him in her mind. Her colleagues, friends and her sister try to help the young woman with her grief. In the first half an hour you get to know the people who surround her, her boss, a psychologist with whom she takes therapy sessions to cope with grief, her Chilean friend and the Pole Titus who adores her, who is keen not only to provide her with technical assistance.

She reacts completely hysterically when her sister cautiously asks if she could have the cello for her son, since Nina can't do anything with it anyway - it's the only thing left of Jamie. A memory of wonderful hours together, in which he played the cello and she played the piano .
Her apartment is deteriorating, rats are spreading around her. Nina just can't let go of the past.

When she believes she can no longer bear her life, the unexpected happens: She hears Jamie's cello sounding, as she often did in her dreams in the past. But this time it's reality, Jamie has returned and is actually sitting in her living room playing the cello. There follows a time in which she is just happy, but slowly she realizes that memory has transfigured a lot, she had placed him on a pedestal that was too high - completely forgotten or repressed his constantly all-determining nature. Then they also annoy his ghost friends who hang around the apartment day and night and watch TV and video.

She meets the psychologist and hobby magician Mark and gets into a conflict of conscience because her lover Jamie is waiting at home, who has returned from the dead because of her. But is she really happy with him or is she just trying to convince herself this? First doubts are dispelled by her, but then never let go. She slowly realizes that Jamie has only come back to give her the opportunity to decide against him. With this knowledge, she is free to live a new life without him, perhaps with a new man by her side, and Jamie can confidently return to the realm of the dead.

Reviews

  • epd Film 9/1991: Minghella succeeds in… keeping the balance between joke and deeper meaning. His film is not a theological meditation on life after death and - despite the sad sounds of strings - not a melodrama either. Minghella did not allow herself to be seduced into an overly flat comedy. This is mainly due to the brilliant actors ...
  • film-dienst 18/1991: Modern, consequently further developed variant of the "Orpheus and Eurydice" material, which addresses the problem of loneliness and "letting go" in today's society. Despite the comedic form, a serious film that convinces with its elegant, light style and the great leading actors.
