action

The writer Blake stays with his wife in his parents' house after a long time. He was awarded a prize for his work, but received no recognition from his father Arthur. As always, he is quietly reproving and mocking the achievements of his now grown-up son. Blake suffers from his father's demeanor and would have at least wished for a “good!” From him at the award ceremony. Some time later, the father collapses while attaching a chandelier . End-stage cancer is diagnosed in the hospital . Doctors don't know how long Arthur will live, and Blake eventually moves back to his parents' house for the final weeks of his father's life.

Again and again he remembers humiliating events from his childhood and youth. If he was impressed by his father's triumphant manner as a child, his dominant and center-pressing manner soon weighed on the sensitive boy. The idea that his father could be having an affair with “Aunt” Beaty and that his cousin Josie was actually a stepsister tormented him for a long time and did not let go of him into adulthood. Other scenes of humiliation - such as during a family vacation where the shy and book-loving teenager Blake was exposed in front of the young hotel companion - mix with memories of family celebrations at which the father flirted unrestrainedly with Aunt Beaty and other women. Blake also regains consciousness in scenes in which Blake had started an affair with the housekeeper and both of them were almost caught in bed by Arthur. He wants to speak to his father, but Arthur, who is now bedridden, puts him off for another day.

A short time later, Arthur's condition has deteriorated so much that he wets himself and doesn't recognize anyone anymore. A little later he dies without a debate. Blake confesses to his wife that he feels cheated. He cannot mourn, but lives out his ever-hidden hatred of his father by having the pacemaker cut out of his chest like a trophy with him. The funeral takes place, and Blake asks Beaty to speak. He wants to know how the relationship was between her and Arthur. She admits that they both had an affair because she was unhappy in their marriage. He comforted her - she wants to keep to herself whether they slept together. However, she reveals to him that Arthur was always very proud of him, but was never able to show it. In a quiet moment, Blake remembers saying goodbye to his parents' house shortly before he started studying, and how he turned down his father's offer to drive him and instead took a taxi. He recalls the moment when they both hugged in the end and the father cried suppressed. He now confesses to his father that he misses him and begins to cry.

A little later, the family scattered Arthur's ashes on the property. Blake remembers the last time he saw his father before his father became increasingly dissimilar from the disease. It was the moment when both of them screwed the chandelier to the wall and switched it on for the first time. In the glow of the chandelier they were both happy before the father abruptly switched off the light and started the next project.

The film-dienst called the film a “drama about a father-son relationship and the confrontation with illness and death, played on two levels of time and carried out by convincing actors, whose staging tries too hard to reduce the bitterness of the material through music and image design to soften sweetish. "
