Transformers: The Last Knight is a science fiction film directed by Michael Bay that was released in German cinemas on June 22, 2017. It is the fifth film in the Transformers real film series . Transformers: The Last Knight combines the mythology of the Cybertron machines with motifs from the Arthurian legend .

action

Even though Optimus Prime left Earth, the Autobots and Decepticons keep coming back to her for some inexplicable reason. Two species clash in their struggle for dominance over the earth: one made of flesh, one made of metal. But Optimus Prime has also returned from the dead, is convinced by Quintessa, his creator, to have to resurrect Cybertron and in this battle he even fights against his old companion and former comrade Bumblebee and is ready for the Resuscitation of Cybertrons to destroy the earth. Megatron is also celebrating its resurrection. Optimus Prime searches the earth for the creators of the Transformers, because after his homeland Cybertron was destroyed, he needs an artifact that was hidden on earth in the time of King Arthur in order to resurrect the planet.

Cade Yeager, a human, finds a strange medallion on a dying Transformer that was made by King Arthur and chosen him. Cade can use his hidden power, because he is the last knight, and the fateful task now falls to him to initiate a peace process between humans and machines. Hundreds of years earlier, there had been twelve Knights of the Round Table fighting side by side with twelve Transformers. Even the legendary wizard Merlin did not acquire his skills through magic, but with the help of Transformers technology.

Cade forms an alliance with Bumblebee, Lord Edmund Burton, history professor Vivian Wembley and the young Izabella to work together with the military under General Morshower and Lt. Rescue Col. William Lennox, because only one of the two planets can survive.

After a fierce battle between Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, the former is brought back to fight for Earth by Cade. He faces Quintessa and defeats Megatron. Optimus Prime and Bumblebee apparently manage to kill Quintessa.

After the earth is saved, both worlds must be rebuilt.

At the end of the film, there is a post-credit scene showing Quintessa, who survived, taking on human form. This will establish a connection to Unicron (Earth).

The trailer, released in December 2016, was backed by a cover version of the song Do You Realize by the US alternative / progressive rock band The Flaming Lips from 2002.

Marketing and Publishing

A first trailer for the film was published in spring 2016. In the fall, Michael Bay announced on the official Transformers: The Last Knight Facebook page that a teaser trailer for the film would be shown in cinemas along with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . This was published in early December 2016. At the beginning of February 2017 Paramount Pictures presented another trailer as part of the 51st Super Bowl . Around 25 minutes from the film were shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in March 2017. It became known that the Last Knight is not a knight of the round table or Optimus Prime, as the teaser poster seemed to imply, but a person from modern times. The title role was therefore awarded to Mark Wahlberg in his role by Cade Yeager. A featurette for Transformers: The Last Knight followed in early April 2017 and another trailer in mid-April 2017. In May 2017, Paramount Pictures launched a new TV commercial called Moment .

The film celebrated its world premiere in London on June 18, 2017 and was released in German cinemas on June 22, 2017. Around this date the film will open in a number of other countries, including the United States.

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The simple story is told quickly and with powerful image and sound effects and shows a clear good-bad scheme as well as positive identification figures for girls and boys. The numerous effective action scenes and individual depictions of violence can overexcite and frighten children under 12 years of age. But since the action scenes are mainly staged as "material battles" and get by without drastic violence, and the staging always emphasizes the unreal of the world shown, even 12-year-olds can distance themselves sufficiently. "

Reviews

So far, the film has only won over 16 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Ursula Stieler of the Huffington Post describes the film as an opportunity for brave newcomers, especially because it could mark the beginning of a new Transformers era. Transformers: The Last Knight definitely promises fans and fans of visually stunning action films a great and intense cinema experience, says Stieler.

Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel thinks that the film only recycles its own ideas and illustrates the overall fatigue of blockbuster cinema. In view of the inevitable déjà vus of genre motifs and iconographies of destruction, Busche explains that the industry journals call this phenomenon franchise fatigue , a symptom of public fatigue in the face of ever new remakes, reboots and spin-offs. Busche goes on to say that the film hardly gives the viewer time to breathe, let alone think.

Christian Berndt from Deutschlandfunk Kultur says that, as always in the Transformers films, a monstrous material battle flares up in the film, which is peppered with a portion of irony and also contains allusions of a political nature, according to the overwhelmed British Prime Minister to whom Lord Edmund Burton reads the riot act.

Gross profit

In the US, the film made the franchise's weakest start with revenues of $ 68.5 million from Wednesday to Sunday, but still landed at number 1 on the box office on its opening weekend. In China, the film grossed 123.4 million US dollars on its opening weekend, which was the second-best start of all time with over 23 million viewers, and thus landed at number 1 on the box office, as well as in the United Kingdom, in Russia South Korea and Japan. In Germany, too, the film landed at number 1 on the cinema charts and has so far recorded 1,189,585 visitors (as of February 25, 2018). The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings so far amounts to around 605 million US dollars, of which around 229 million US dollars in China alone, which puts Transformers: The Last Knight in 16th place of the most successful films of 2017 and in 153th place in the world's most successful films of all time .

Awards

On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Steve Jablonsky's work was on a shortlist from which the nominations for Best Film Music will be made at the 2018 Academy Awards . Further nominations in the context of film awards follow.

  • Nomination in the Choice Action Movie category

continuation

Transformers: The Last Knight is not only the fifth film in the Transformers real-life series, but also the first film to be planned as part of a new Transformers film universe. Michael Bay explained at a preview event that this universe had been planned for many years and that there were already 14 other stories that could be considered for films. Among other things, a spin-off about the Autobot Bumblebee was planned in younger years, as Bay explained, and an animated film about the prehistory of the planet Cybertron. The realized Bumblebee offshoot is a kind of prequel and started in cinemas in June 2018.

Now that the specially created Writers Room has been closed, the future of live-action films is uncertain. In April 2019, the producer of the series, Lorenzo DiBonaventura, announced that Michael Bay will no longer be a director.
