Trolltunga ( German  "The Troll's Tongue" ) is a horizontal rocky outcrop in Norway , which is about ten kilometers northeast of Odda on the Sørfjord . This rock is a nose around 10 meters long, which tapers with a height of five meters at its beginning to a few centimeters at the top. The ledge is located around 700 meters above the artificial Ringedalsvatnet reservoir .

reachability

From 1911 to 2004 Trolltunga was accessible via the Mågelibane , a funicular , which, however, is no longer operated due to technical problems. In the meantime, the entire route, around 28 km there and back, has to be covered on foot. There is also a via ferrata on the mountain, which can also be used to reach the ledge. Sometimes there is snow all year round on the high plateau in front of the Trolltunga.

safety

Although Trolltunga is visited by around 40,000 tourists each year, there was only one fatal accident there until 2015. In September 2015, an Australian student fell and died after trying to leave the rock after taking a photo.

However, both the municipality and the volunteers complain about the many unnecessary rescue missions on the way to Trolltunga. The main reason that tourists keep getting stranded in the mountains is almost always poor equipment.
