Kjerag or Kiragg is a rocky plateau in the Norwegian municipality of Sandnes ( Fylke Rogaland ) on the Lysefjord .
The highest point of the plateau is about 1020 moh. In the western part of the plateau lies the Kjeragbolten (see picture), an approx. 5 m³ monolith that is wedged in a crevice 1000 m above the Lysefjord. There is also a small, 715 m high waterfall ( Kjeragfossen ).
Kjerag is next to the Pulpit Rock one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region and a popular starting point for base jumpers .
There are various free climbs on the almost 1000 meter high north face - as well as technical big wall climbing routes . The rock is vertical to overhanging and of good to excellent quality. The best time for climbing is July / August. Guides are available from the Stavanger Climbing Club ("BRV").
The hiking trail to Kjerag starts at Øygardstølen , a restaurant 640 m above Lysebotn . From there, the route takes around 2.5 hours through sometimes arduous terrain to Kjerag, the return route takes the same route and takes about the same time. The path is secured in places with iron chains. In addition to the actual climb, two mountains and two valleys have to be overcome on the route. The valleys are characterized by swampy terrain or lakes.
