Preikestolen or Prekestolen ( Norwegian for the pulpit or literally the sermon chair ) is a natural rock platform (rock pulpit ) in Ryfylke in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Rogaland and a tourist attraction with a wide view over the Lysefjord and neighboring mountains. The size of the rock plateau is around 25 by 25 meters. The edge of the rock drops 604 meters vertically into the almost 40 kilometer long fjord .

The pulpit is a tourist attraction. It was hiked by around 300,000 people in 2018; in 2013 there were still 200,000 visitors. This is viewed critically by nature conservationists.

The Felskanzel is located in Rogaland, a western district in southern Norway. The distance to Stavanger , the fourth largest city in Norway, is around 25 kilometers as the crow flies.

The platform can only be reached via a hiking trail from the end of the signposted road at Preikestolhytta . The normal travel time for the one-way route is 1.5–2 hours for the approx. 3.8 km with an altitude difference of 330 meters. The path first leads steeply up a ridge and then almost at ground level over plank paths through marshy forest to Urskarhöhe ( 418  moh. ), Through the Krogabekkmyra swamp and from there over a scree field to the Neverdalsskaretpass ( 532  moh. ). Past the Tjødnane lake group , you finally reach the unsecured platform via a section secured with stairs and railings.

Emergence

The rock formation was created by frost blasting around 10,000 years ago, when the edges of the glacier reached above the rock. The water froze in the crevices and blew off large, angular blocks that the glacier then carried with it, whereby today's “pulpit” remained. Today, too, there is a deep crack along the plateau. The region's geologists confirm, however, that there is no risk of the plateau breaking.

landscape

The landscape at the Preikestol is characterized by light granite rock . There are densely formed and multicolored green valleys in the Rogaland region. The mountains there reach heights of up to 843 meters. Between the round mountain tops, the plateaus are interspersed with lakes. The gneiss and granite rocks offer good conditions for climbing.

Lake Refsvatn lies below the Preikestolhytta.

tourism

The spectacular sight of the Preikestol and its high level of awareness make it a must for many Norway tourists. A record was set on July 17, 2019 with 5,342 visitors. Nature conservationists criticize the fact that long queues form on the hiking trail with such a rush and that the improvised infrastructure - such as toilets, but also the increasing number of emergency and rescue missions - unnecessarily burden the surrounding wilderness.

climate

There is a mild and humid coastal climate along the fjord. However, it can also be cool in summer on the plateaus, which are between 600 and 1,000 meters high. Large amounts of snow fall there in winter.

Plot and film location

Igor Bauersima's play norway.today takes place at the Preikestol; the main characters plan their suicide there.

In the action film Mission Impossible: Fallout , released in 2018 , the climax of the final chase was filmed on the Preikestol, although the action of the scene is set in Kashmir . For this purpose, 800 helicopter landings were requested on the rock.

Preikestolen was also the location of an exclusive live set by Einmusik and Jonas Saalbach for Cercle.
