Mågelibanen was a double-track, electric funicular in Norway . Two wagons ran on it from Vetlavatnet at Mågeli kraftverk in Skjeggedal near Tyssedal in the municipality of Ullensvang to Mågelitopp . The route was 960 meters long and had a height difference of 430 meters. The terminus Mågelitopp (simply called Topp by the population ) was 860  moh. . The railway machine house was located in the mountain station, and it was operated by push buttons on the two cars.

The funicular was part of the industrial landscape in Skjeggedal and the cultural environment of the listed Tyssedal power station .

history

The funicular was built by Tyssefaldene AS in 1911/1912 to carry construction workers and equipment up into the mountains. It was needed to build a power station in Bersåvassdraget in Tyssedalsfjellene.

The line was later used by the company for inspection and maintenance of the systems and in connection with the further expansion of power stations in the mountains.

passenger traffic

In connection with the 50th anniversary of Tyssefaldene AS in 1956/57, the route was reconstructed and given to the residents of Tyssedal. The railway was released for restricted public passenger traffic in order to provide easier access to the leisure areas in Hardangervidda .

Current situation

Funicular

The cable car was modernized in 1988. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the railway was opened for the transport of tourists. The Trolltunga rock formation was an interesting destination for these visitors .

The route was open to the public until 2012. Then it was closed to commercial use for safety. Now a road is to be built to the summit in order to develop an existing holiday home area. Protection interests in the area are not strong enough to prevent road construction. After the line was closed to public transport, the goods had to be transported to the holiday homes by helicopter. The only way to get to the houses was by walking. The railway is to be preserved after the road is completed.
