action

The six-part series describes the game of political intrigue at the court of King Henry VIII of England in the decade between 1530 and 1540 from the perspective of Thomas Cromwell , who as Master Secretary was the king's closest confidante and political advisor during these years .

The 40-year-old King Henry VIII tried since 1527 to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled by the Pope, as no male heirs to the throne emerged from this marriage. But all efforts of the Lord Chancellor Cardinal Wolsey in Rome fail. The almighty Cardinal Wolsey loses his office as Lord Chancellor. He is arrested by Harry Percy , the Duke of Northumberland, on the orders of the King and dies while being transferred to the Tower.

Thomas Cromwell, who came from a humble background, studied law and worked his way up as a lawyer in Wolsey's service. While the well-respected humanist Thomas More rises to Heinrich's new Lord Chancellor, the king also becomes aware of Thomas Cromwell. Increasingly, Cromwell - suspiciously eyed by the old nobility because of his low origin - wins the favor of the king. In 1533 Cromwell, who quietly sympathized with the German reformers, was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by the King and, in 1534, Royal Secretary. Under Cromwell's leadership, the parliament passes the Supreme Act , which makes the king, instead of the pope, head of an independent English church. This makes the divorce of Henry VIII from Catherine possible and he can officially marry his favorite Anne Boleyn and make her Queen of England.

As a result, Parliament passed the Act of Succession that same year . This law confirms the legitimacy of all children who should emerge from the new marriage. In 1533 Anne Boleyn gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth to the king , but the longed-for male heir to the throne does not materialize. Thomas More, who had already resigned the office of Lord Chancellor in 1532, refused to take the oath on the act of success. Together with John Fisher , Bishop of Rochester, More was imprisoned and executed in July 1535. Thomas Audley is his successor at the suggestion of Thomas Cromwell . In view of the lack of heir to the throne, the king's initial love grows cold and gradually turns into anger, especially as the queen continues her dissolute court life unbroken. In August 1535 the king met the young lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour at the Wolf Hall estate and fell in love with her. When Anne Boleyn had a miscarriage (January 1536), the king interpreted this as God's judgment. To secure the house of Tudor, he sees the birth of a son as necessary and instructs Cromwell to also annul his second marriage in order to be able to marry Jane Seymour. Cromwell then spins an intrigue from the statements of courtiers, especially the chambermaid Jane Parker , wife of Anne Boleyn's brother George, and accuses the Queen of adultery with three courtiers and of inbreeding with her brother George Boleyn , Lord Rochford. The king gives Cromwell a free hand. On May 1, 1536, Cromwell had the Queen arrested. The accused men and the queen are charged and sentenced to death. On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn was beheaded in the courtyard of the Tower in London by a French executioner whom the king had specially ordered from Calais.
