Eustace Chapuys

Eustace Chapuys (* 1489 in Annecy , † 1556 in Leuven ) was a Savoy diplomat. He was among others on behalf of Charles V . worked as ambassador at the court of Henry VIII of England and later for Mary of Hungary .

Life

From 1507 to 1515 he studied at the University of Turin . In 1517 he became an official of the diocese of Geneva and later served Charles III. of Savoy and Charles III. de Bourbon-Montpensier . In 1527 he entered the service of Charles V. After an embassy mission to the Court of Savoy, he became Ambassador to the Court of St James’s in September 1529 .

Chapuys argued over the marriage contract of Catherine of Aragón , who died in January 1536. In March 1539, Paul III. Charles V and Francis I of France almost convinced to campaign against Henry VIII. Diego Hurtado de Mendoza unsuccessfully offered Henry VIII a marriage contract with Christina of Denmark on behalf of Charles V. In March 1539, Chapuys received instructions from Flanders to apply for exit papers.

Mary of Hungary appointed Philippe Maioris her ambassador to Henry VIII. Eustace Chapuys came to Calais on April 19, 1539 , where he instructed Philippe Maioris, his representative; he sailed to Dover on April 23, 1539 .

Eustace Chapuys spent 1539 in Antwerp . In 1540 he returned to London and sought discharge in 1545 due to illness. The request was granted after he had trained his successor Frans van der Dilft . Chapuys then lived in Leuven , where he founded the College of Savoy in 1548 .

In William Shakespeare's drama Henry VIII , Eustace Chapuys was the model for the character of Capucius . This became a main character of Robert Bolt in the film version A Man for All Seasons . In the series The Tudors he is played by Anthony Brophy.
