Walter Kobéra

Walter Kobéra is an Austrian conductor and artistic director . He is one of the leading conductors of contemporary music theater in Vienna. With the numerous successful first and world premieres under his direction, he has had a decisive influence on Viennese musical life in recent years.

biography

Walter Kobéra attended the Musikgymnasium in Vienna , studied violin and was a member of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria from 1978 , also as conductor and musical assistant to Isaac Karabtchevsky and Fabio Luisi . In 1986 he founded his amadeus ensemble-wien, which in recent years has specialized in contemporary music theater. Walter Kobéra is a lecturer for modern music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

Since 1991 he has been musical director of the Neue Oper Wien , and since 1993 also its artistic director. His interpretations of Alban Berg's Lulu , Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd , Helmut Lachenmann's Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelholzern , György Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre , Friedrich Cerhas Baal and Gerhard Schedl's triptych were appreciated by the press and the public . Most recently in Bratislava , Prague and Dublin he directed a new production of Strauss ' Ariadne auf Naxos .

Walter Kobéra is the artistic director of the concert series “Sound Experience St. Stephen's Cathedral ”, which has been taking place since 2008 . He has worked with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria , the Vienna Concert Association , the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the ensemble die reihe .
