Herwig Reiter

Herwig Reiter (born June 26, 1941 in Waidhofen an der Thaya ) is an Austrian conductor and composer .

biography

Herwig Reiter comes from a family of musicians, his father Albert Reiter was also a music teacher and composer. He was initially an alto soloist with the Vienna Boys' Choir . Even before completing his studies, he was hired as Kapellmeister to the Vienna Boys' Choir, where he worked from 1963 to 1970.

From 1964 to 1980 he worked at a Viennese grammar school, where he and Gertraud Cerha and Roswitha Helmberg founded a type of school in which music and the visual arts play a preferred role. Until 2002 he was professor for didactics and conducting at the University of Applied Sciences , and later at the Vienna University of Music .

In addition, he worked at the Vienna University of Music as a conductor, production manager and was active as a speaker and juror at the federal youth singing in Spittal an der Drau . Reiter founded the Vienna Young Orchestra and the Webern Chamber Choir , which is now directed by Alois Glaßner . In Japan he is also known for tours and in Austria for broadcasts on the radio.

Since his retirement he has mainly devoted himself to his compositions. Herwig Reiter's compositions have been published on CD and his first opera Campiello was premiered by the Neue Oper Wien in 2010. Reiter also wrote two textbooks for music education ( listening and design ) and a choir book, for which he is known in the Austrian choir scene.
