Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell (* around 1520 in London , † July 4, 1551 in Launde Abbey , Leicestershire ) was an English nobleman .

family

Gregory Cromwell was the only son of the English statesman Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex and his wife Elizabeth Wykes. He had two sisters, Anne and Grace, and a half-sister, Jane (an illegitimate daughter of his father). His mother and two sisters died in London in the summer of 1528 from an epidemic known as English sweat .

On August 3, 1537, he married Lady Elizabeth Seymour, widow of Sir Anthony Ughtred, sister of Queen Jane Seymour . He thus became brother-in-law of King Henry VIII.

Live and act

Gregory enjoyed an excellent upbringing. After studying at Cambridge from 1528 to 1533, he worked with his father. Due to his family ties to the royal family, he survived the fall and execution of his father in 1540 and then devoted himself to the administration and cultivation of his land. By ostracizing his father, however, he lost the right to inherit his title Earl of Essex . Instead, King Henry VIII awarded him the hereditary title of Baron Cromwell , of Oakham in the County of Rutland, on December 18, 1540 .

On July 4, 1551, he died on his country estate, Launde Abbey in Leicestershire, also of English sweat.

progeny

From his marriage to Elizabeth Seymour he had five children:

  • Henry Cromwell, 2nd Baron Cromwell (around 1538–1592), ⚭ before 1560 Mary Paulet
  • Edward (1539-before 1553)
  • Thomas (around 1540–1610 / 11), ⚭ 1580 Katherine Gardner
  • Catherine (* 1541), ⚭ Sir John Strode of Parnham
  • Frances (around 1544–1562), ⚭ 1560 Richard Strode of Newnham

His widow, who survived the disease, married John Paulet, Lord St. John , in 1554 . She died on March 19, 1568.
