Oakham is the administrative seat and the largest place of the English Unitary Authority Rutland in the East Midlands region . In 2001 the community ( civil parish ) had 9,975 inhabitants.

Oakham is 17 miles east of Leicester . To the east of Oakham, the Rutland Water reservoir extends with the Hambleton Peninsula.

traffic
The A 606 runs through Oakham and connects the place with Melton Mowbray and Nottingham in the northwest and Stamford in the east. In Oakham the A 6003 branches off south towards Corby and Kettering . Since January 2007, the busy town center has been relieved by a bypass road.
Oakham Railway Station is on the Peterborough to Birmingham railway line .
economy
The largest employer is the British branch of the US mail order company Lands' End . Its European warehouse in Oakham mainly supplies customers in Great Britain and Germany.
