Pete Barnes

Peter Loraine "Pete" Barnes (born March 20, 1962 in Nottingham , † January 16, 2013 in Vauxhall , London ) was a British helicopter pilot who was involved in various British and American films and television productions. Considered one of the most experienced pilots in the UK , he has flown several celebrities since 1991. From 1988 until his death in January 2013, Barnes completed more than 10,500 flight hours.

Life

Barnes was born in Nottingham in 1962 and attended Oakham Independent School in Oakham , Rutland . In the mid-1980s he began studying economics at the Derbyshire College of Higher Education , which he graduated in the early 1990s. In 1992 he began studying marketing at the University of Derby .

Flying career

In 1989, after having obtained a green card , he moved to the USA and acquired a pilot's license and a commercial helicopter license in Florida . He then worked as a pilot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and on the east coast of the United States.

In 1991 he returned to England and started working for Glenair Helicopters. There he worked as a helicopter mechanic in Northern Ireland and Scotland. He also flew across the UK as a helicopter pilot , opening up a career in the film industry. This was followed by several assignments for camera flights and extras as a pilot for British and American films.

At the end of the 1990s he founded his company Helivision Ltd in Reading and worked as a pilot in various feature films. He made appearances as a pilot in the films Casino Royale , James Bond - Die Another Day , Saving Private Ryan , Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life and the BBC show Coast. He also worked with his company as a helicopter pilot for broadcasting the America's Cup yacht race and various F1 powerboat races. From 1997 to 2011 he was under contract as a professional pilot at RotorMotion and worked for the company in various positions. At RotorMotion he acted as a pilot for news broadcasters and the Metro FM radio in Newcastle upon Tyne for traffic information . He also flew tourists across the UK. In 1999 he became a rescue pilot with the Great North Air Ambulance Crew and in 2004 he was awarded an award for outstanding courage and skill for his role in a river rescue in the northeast of the British Isles. From 2011 he worked for Redhill Aerodrome and was involved in news broadcasts for the BBC and Sky News. In 2011 he became ambassador for the Summer Olympics in London .

death

Barnes caught his helicopter, an AgustaWestland AW109 , in a construction crane in Vauxhall on January 16, 2013 and crashed with the helicopter. After hitting the road, the helicopter burned out; Barnes died in the wreck.

Private

Barnes lived near Mortimer in Berkshire with his partner Rebecca and their adopted children until his death .
