The company's history began as a sailboat outfitting business in Chicago in 1963 . The founders included Gary Campbell Comer (1927-2006) and his partners Robert Halperin , Richard Stearns and two of Stearns employees.
The name can be traced back to this origin, whereby an incorrectly placed apostrophe - originally meant Land's End - is said to be due to a misprint. Company founder Gary Comer was unable to withdraw the incorrectly printed advertising material for cost reasons, which resulted in the incorrect spelling of the company name.
After the business expanded to include clothing and furnishings, the headquarters were relocated to Wisconsin . The entry into the market in Great Britain took place in 1993, Japan followed in 1994 and Germany in 1996.
In 2002, Comer sold the company to the Sears Company for $ 1.9 billion. This brought Lands' End to NASDAQ in 2014 and thus separated from its subsidiary after 12 years.
