Richard Stearns, the member of the Shore and Chicago Yacht Club , was adopted in the Star class at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in part. Together with Lynn Williams he finished the regatta in second place behind Durward Knowles and Cecil Cooke from the Bahamas and in front of the Swedes Pelle Petterson and Holger Sundström , with which they received the silver medal. At world championships , Stearns placed four times on the podium in the star boat: in 1947 he finished third with Robert Rodgers, initially in Los Angeles , four years later he finished second in Gibson Island with Rodgers. With Lynn Williams he finally became world champion in Cascais in 1962 . In 1966 in Kiel , Stearns and Williams finished third together. At the Pan American Games in São Paulo in 1963 , he also won the gold medal in the star boat with Robert Halperin .
With Halperin, Gary Comer and two employees from his sailmaking company, Stearns also founded Lands' End as a mail order company in 1963 .
