Baron Cromwell

Baron Cromwell is a hereditary British title of nobility created five times in the Peerage of England .

Awards

The title was first created on March 10, 1308 by Writ of Summons for John de Cromwell . It already went out around 1335 with his death.

The second bestowal was on December 28, 1375 by Writ of Summons to Ralph de Cromwell . As Barony by writ , the title fell in 1456, with the childless death of the 3rd Baron, in Abeyance between his two nieces, which ended after the death of the younger in 1490 for the older as the 4th Baroness. When she died childless in 1497, the title fell in Abeyance between the three granddaughters of her grandfather, the 2nd baron, or their heirs. The title was suspended for 426 years until it was restored to Robert Bewicke-Copley as 5th Baron on July 16, 1923 . Today's title holder is his grandson Godfrey Bewicke-Copley, 7th Baron Cromwell . While the title was dormant, the Cromwell Barony had been re-created and lapsed three more times.

On July 25, 1461, the title was re-created, this time by Writ of Summons for Sir Humphrey Bourchier , third son of Henry Bourchier, 1st Earl of Essex . He was married to one of the two nieces of the 3rd Baron's second bestowal. The title is sometimes called Baron Bourchier of Cromwell . His title expired ten years later when he died childless.

On July 9, 1536, the title of Baron Cromwell , of Wimbledon in the County of Surrey , was created by Letters patent for the English statesman Thomas Cromwell . On April 17, 1540 he was also awarded the title Earl of Essex . In July 1540 he was ostracized for high treason , his titles were revoked and he was executed.

In the fifth bestowal on December 18, 1540, the title Baron Cromwell , of Oakham in the County of Rutland , was created for Thomas Cromwell's son Gregory . His great-grandson, the 4th Baron, was elevated to Viscount Lecale , of Lecale in Ulster, in the Peerage of Ireland on November 22, 1624 , and Earl of Ardglass on April 15, 1645 ; was conducted. All three titles expired on November 26, 1687 with the death of his second son, the 4th Earl and 7th Baron.
