Godfrey John Bewicke-Copley, 7th Baron Cromwell (born March 4, 1960 ) is an English nobleman and member of the House of Lords .

Origin and family environment

He was descended in the female line of Ralph de Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell , who in 1375 was a Writ of Summons from King Edward III. received and was thus appointed as a hereditary peer in the House of Lords. Since a so-called barony by writ was created for him , which could also be inherited in a female line, the title was passed on to the female descendants in the absence of male heirs, but generally only if there was only one female heir from a title holder. If there were several female beneficiaries, the title was suspended (fell into abeyance ) until either there was only one descendant of the last title holder who was entitled to inherit or the crown selected one of several candidates and awarded him the title ( call out of abeyance ). This case did not occur until 1923 after the early extinction of the male line in the early 15th century, when the Bewicke-Copley family was awarded the title as descendants of a daughter of the 1st Baron Cromwell. The title has been owned by this family ever since.

Life of the current title holder

The future 7th Baron Cromwell was born on March 4, 1960 as the son of David Bewicke-Copley, 6th Baron Cromwell and Vivian Lisle-Panfold. In 1982 he followed his father after his death and became a member of the House of Lords . Before that he had received his education in Eton . He then studied at Selwyn College in Cambridge . In 1982 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1986 a Master of Arts degree . With the reform of the British House of Lords in 1999, he lost his seat in the House of Lords as he was not one of the 92 elected hereditary peers who could continue to retain their seat in the House of Lords. On April 9, 2014, he was re-elected for the hereditary peer seat vacated by the death of Lord Moran . In the election for the replacement of the vacant seat, he had received 13 votes, one vote more than the second-placed Lord Russell of Liverpool . Since then he has been one of the independents, the so-called Crossbenchers , in the upper house.
