Richard John McMoran Wilson, 2nd Baron Moran , KCMG (born September 22, 1924 - February 14, 2014 in London ) was a British politician , diplomat , soldier and peer .

life and career

Wilson was born on September 22, 1924 to Charles Wilson, 1st Baron Moran , and Dorothy Dufton. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve from 1943 to 1945. Wilson served as an ordinary seaman on HMS Belfast . Later promoted to sub-lieutenant, he served on the destroyer HMS Oribi . In 1945 he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office .

In 1973 he wrote a biography about the British Prime Minister Henry Campbell-Bannerman . For this he received the Costa Book Award . In the same year he became ambassador to Hungary and remained so until 1976. Then Wilson was ambassador to Portugal until 1981 and from 1981 to 1984 he was high commissioner to Canada .

On April 12, 1977 he inherited the title of Baron Moran . From 1992 to 1994 he was a board member and from 1996 to 1997 Vice President of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds . He has been President of the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association from 1988 to 1995 and again since 2000 .

In 1999, Wilson was one of the hereditary peers who retained their seat in the House of Lords under the House of Lords Act 1999 . There he sat as a crossbencher . Since 2006, he has been Vice Chairman of the Conservation and Wildlife Group .

family

Since 1948 he was married to Shirley Rowntree Harris. They had two sons and a daughter together.
