Victor Frankenstein - Genius and Madness is an American horror film directed by Paul McGuigan , based on the novel Frankenstein or Der moderne Prometheus (Original: Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus ) by Mary Shelley . action

A battered, hunchbacked creature works as a clown in a circus and is teased and tormented by its colleagues. One day, however, the young medical student Victor Frankenstein realizes the intellectual potential of the clown, because in addition to his work in the circus, he reads the latest medical books. In order to be able to use his special talent, he frees him from the circus, makes him his assistant and calls him Igor. They successfully assemble monsters from animal carcasses until Frankenstein's wealthy fellow student Finnegan commissions them to create a new human for him. Igor meets Lorelei, who also once worked in the circus, with whom he falls in love, but who also wants to prevent him from continuing the project. Finally, the two of them part ways for a short time, as Igor believes his friend is going too far after an investigator who was on the trail of the two was seriously injured in an attempt to escape. Frankenstein is now moving to Scotland and continuing his work. Meanwhile, Finnegan wants to have Igor killed because he seems to know too much, but not without revealing to him that he plans to claim Frankenstein's success for himself. Igor survives the attempted murder and rushes to help with Lorelei Frankenstein. This actually manages to animate an almost human body, but something goes wrong and he has to realize that what he has created is not life. Together with Igor, he manages to kill the monster. Then they part ways, with Frankenstein leaving the possibility open to try again at some point.

background

It is a retelling of Mary Shelley's horror classic, told from the point of view of Igor, the right hand of the eponymous medical doctor Victor (von) Frankenstein, and is a very free adaptation of the Frankenstein myth. Igor, however, is an invention of the film industry, and the hunchbacked assistant was first added to the story in the 1939 film Frankenstein's Son .

reception

Gross profit

Victor Frankenstein - Genius and Madness had the worst start of a film that had shown in over 2,500 theaters with revenues of $ 2.35 million on the first weekend after the premiere in US theaters. Worldwide revenues for the film are currently around 34 million US dollars (as of May 17, 2016).

Reviews

For the most part, the film received negative feedback. Only 24 percent of the reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes have a positive tenor. In summary it says: “ Victor Frankenstein is an unimaginative remake. The film tries to approach the often told story from a fresh perspective, but ultimately has little to offer that has not already been seen in better Frankenstein films. "

Ralf Krämer from the Berliner Morgenpost comments on the director's new approach, which made the assistant rise to the main character of the story: It is with regret that one sees him robbed of his uniqueness, and the film becomes a grotesque comedy with Gore elements , which finally comes with creation of the monster mutated into a terrifyingly unimaginative action adventure.

Carsten Beyer from RBB Kulturradio says about the new narrative focus that the director chose by not placing the insane doctor and his monster in the foreground, but the assistant, and giving them a few other functions: In addition to horror and action - Paul McGuigan also put a love story between Igor and Lorelei in his film and a detective story about a fanatical Scotland Yard inspector […] Far too much for almost two hours.

Felix Zwinzscher from DIE WELT also recognizes too much of a good thing in the work of the screenwriters, who instead of a living story would have created only unmotivated patched scenes that would only be kept alive by a continuous injection of Deus ex Machina : reasons are constantly being given to the characters afterwards who should explain their actions. The actual creation of the monster only works because the authors simply pull a power-hungry noble family out of thin air, which is suddenly very interested in Frankenstein's research.

The dpa thinks about the main cast of the film: Daniel Radcliffe plays the transformed hunchback who remains true to his savior Frankenstein despite remorse. For James McAvoy, all that remains is pathetic declamation and gesturing, and Jessica Brown Finlay is unfortunately only a pretty accessory.
