Max Landis (born August 3, 1985 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film director , screenwriter and actor .

Life

Landis was born in 1985, the second child of director John Landis and costume designer Deborah Nadoolman . His older sister Rachel is not in the film business.

Landis first appeared as an actor, often in his father's films such as Ein Familie zum Kukzen , Blues Brothers 2000 or Burke & Hare .

He wrote his first scripts in the early 2000s. In 2005, his script for an episode of the television series Masters of Horror was implemented under the direction of his father. During his studies at the University of Miami , Landis wrote various scripts for short films, which were then implemented by film students.

After graduating, Landis was able to write his script for the superhero film Chronicle - What are you capable of? to producer John Davis , who eventually filmed it in 2012 under the direction of Josh Trank . The film was hugely successful both in critics and at the box office.

This was followed by the scripts for the stoner movie American Ultra and the horror film Victor Frankenstein - Genie und Wahnsinn , both of which were released in 2015, but could not build on the success of Chronicle . Both films received moderate to negative reviews and flopped at the box office. Landis also wrote the script for the fantasy action film Bright , which was released on Netflix in 2017 .

Landis' directorial debut, the comedy Me Him Her , for which he also wrote the script, opened in US cinemas in 2016 and was simultaneously released on video-on-demand . Landis had already completed the shooting of the film in 2014. In April 2016, the film adaptation of his screenplay Mr. Right was released directly on DVD and video on demand.

Landis developed Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency series based on the novels by Douglas Adams for the BBC . The series was canceled after the second season aired in 2017.

Sexual abuse and rape allegations

Landis was already heavily criticized in 2013 after he repeatedly expressed himself sexist and misogynist in an interview, and boasted that his behavior caused several psychological problems in an ex-girlfriend, such as anxiety disorders , self-hatred and dysmorphophobia .

In the course of the MeToo movement, accusations of several women against Landis increased in 2017. In particular, former employees testified against him, with allegations ranging from psychological and physical violence to sexual abuse and rape. A total of eight women spoke up by 2019.
