Chronicle - what are you capable of? (Original title: Chronicle ) is a science fiction film in which Josh Trank directed and Max Landis wrote the screenplay.

action

The introverted and bullied Andrew, his cousin Matt and the charismatic Steve attend the same school in Seattle . Andrew begins to record his daily routine with a video camera; this begins with his sick mother and his alcoholic, disaffected father, who is unable to work after an accident at work and has since been unemployed, and who beats Andrew more often when he is drunk.

After a nightly party, Andrew - as always with a camera -, Matt and Steve enter a tunnel where they encounter a crystalline, glowing object. The next morning they discover telekinetic abilities in themselves, but can no longer remember details of their nocturnal experience; Andrew's video camera was left in the tunnel. They use their powers for the time being to z. B. Building Lego figures or catching balls. You can see that shy Andrew has the best control over his skills.

When they return to the tunnel, it has been buried and the police cordoned it off. The group keeps their skills secret and continues to expand them, mainly using them for pranks. When the three boys on the street are harassed by a driver driving up close, Andrew steers his car off the track down the embankment. Steve rescues the injured driver from the car that drove into a pond. Matt insists that the three limit their abilities and not use them against living beings and not when they are angry.

After a while, Steve notices that the telekinetics can even fly with the help of their gift. Little by little, a close friendship develops and they decide to go on a vacation trip with the help of their energies. Steve suggests the sunny island of Maui , whereas Andrew would like to visit Tibet because he thinks it is peaceful there.

At a talent competition, the still shy Andrew appears as a magician in which he shines with the help of his skills; at the party afterwards it is noticed for the first time by young women. At the end of the party, Andrew and the pretty Monica's night of love fails; he vomits and Monica flees in disgust. This leads Andrew to increasingly aggressive behavior. When his father hits him again, he uses his gift to knock him down. He escapes into a violent storm, which causes Steve and Matt to have severe nosebleeds. Steve, who follows him and tries to calm him down, is struck by lightning and killed. At Steve's funeral, Matt accuses Andrew of causing the lightning. Andrew then goes to Steve's grave and apologizes on the grounds that he is out of control.

At school, Andrew is bullied again over the incident with Monica. For this he reciprocates by pulling out three teeth from one of the bullies from a distance of several meters. Then he tries to pay for his mother's medication by stealing. In his father's firefighter uniform, he assaults and injures some youngsters of the same age who have beaten him several times, and takes their money from them. During the subsequent robbery on a gas station, an explosion occurs when Andrew deflects the shotgun pellets from the tank attendant's gun. He is then taken to the hospital and placed under police surveillance. When his father comes to his sickbed, informs his apparently unconscious son of his mother's death, accuses him ever more violently of being to blame for her death, and finally tries to hit him, Andrew wakes up, takes his father's arm and destroys the outer wall of the hospital.

Matt, who is alarmed by another nosebleed and sees a TV report about the explosion, drives to the scene of the accident. Andrew drops his father from a height, but Matt catches him. Andrew is mad at Matt for this. Thereupon a violent fight breaks out between the two, in which some houses, cars and people are damaged. It's becoming increasingly clear that Matt Andrew was no match. The police also have to admit defeat to Andrew despite a large contingent. Matt tries desperately to bring Andrew to his senses and promises him not to leave him alone again if he escapes with him now. However, Andrew sees himself as a " top predator ", as the next stage in human evolution. He says he is “stronger than all of this” (this is what his terminally ill mother said to him before she died). When Andrew attacks more police officers, no longer controls his immense powers and begins to destroy everything, Matt finally sees no alternative but to kill Andrew. He himself flees from the police who are approaching again.

Some time later, Matt is in Tibet with a camera and explains that he wants to use his strength for good. He moves the camera so that a Tibetan monastery becomes visible, symbolically fulfilling Andrew's wish to see Tibet. With the words "You did it, Andrew!" He leaves the field of view of the camera.

production

Chronicle was written by Max Landis and Josh Trank, and Trank also directed. Due to the low budget of US $ 12 million, Chronicle was filmed mainly in Cape Town , South Africa with Film Afrika Worldwide and in Vancouver , Canada . Filming began in May 2011 and lasted 18 weeks until August 2011. Cinematographer Matthew Jensen used an Arri Alexa camera and Angenieux Optimo and Cook s4 lenses to shoot. In post-production, techniques were used to give the film a found footage look (as if the characters had filmed themselves). The Arri Alexa camera was mounted on a skateboard in one scene to make it look like Andrew's camera was sliding across a floor. For flight scenes, stuntmen were lifted into the air by cranes. Close-ups of the actors in the air was charged with green screens worked. Andrew's camera in the film was a Canon XL1 MiniDV, later switching to an HD camera that is similar to a Canon Vixia HF M30. His “Seattle” bedroom was actually a set that was set up in a film studio in Cape Town. Since it was filmed in South Africa, where vehicles have the steering wheel on the right because of left-hand traffic, the vehicles typical for the Seattle venue had to be delivered for production with a steering wheel mounted on the left. The scene in which Andrew telekinetically implosions a car was done with huge hydraulic pumps on the inside of the car that sucked in the metal.

The film was released on February 1, 2012 in the UK and Ireland and on February 3, 2012 in the US . The release date for Germany was April 19, 2012. In the countries where the film has already been released, it met with positive criticism and became a box-office hit. With a production budget of $ 12 million, the film grossed approximately $ 126 million worldwide.

advertising

A trailer for the film, along with an advertising campaign showing "People Flying" in New York City , can be found on Yahoo Movies. At the beginning of January, NFL viewers in the USA were able to use their smartphones to film a QR code on the screen, which provided access to exclusive video material on the film.

continuation

According to the online magazine Deadline.com , Fox has had screenwriter Max Landis signed for a sequel. It is not clear whether Josh Trank will participate in a second part. The Hollywood Reporter made a brief hint in its March 23, 2012 issue that a sequel was in production. Max Landis officially announced the sequel at the end of April 2012; he's writing the script and Josh Trank is again directing.

In the course of 2013, however, there were rifts between the studio and both Landis and Trank, which is why the two filmmakers devoted themselves to other projects one after the other. It wasn't until April 2014 that Jack Stanley, a new screenwriter, was introduced for the sequel.
