Frazer Hines (born September 22, 1944 in Horsforth , West Riding of Yorkshire United Kingdom) is a British actor .

life and career

Hines started acting at the age of ten. In 1964 he starred in the television series Smugglers Bay with Patrick Troughton . While Patrick Troughton only played a minor role, Hines was seen in a leading role. From 1966 to 1969, Hines played Jamie McCrimmon, a companion of the Second Doctor , in the British television series Doctor Who . In the special The Five Doctors (1983), as well as in the episode The Two Doctors (1985), he played Jamie McCrimmon again. With a total of 117 episodes, Jamie McCrimmon is the companion who has been in Doctor Who for the longest time. From 1972 to 1994, Hines played Joe Sugden in 627 episodes of the television series Emmerdale Farm . In 2015, Hines starred as Sir Fletcher Gordon in an episode of the television series Outlander . Author Diana Gabaldon said she was inspired by a Doctor Who episode, starring Hines as Scotsman Jamie McCrimmon, to write the series. She named the main character Jamie Fraser after Jamie McCrimmon.

Hines also works as a theater actor. For example, he played many plays at the Theater Royal in Grantham. In 2015 he appeared in the play And Then There Were None at the Grand Theater in Leeds.

Private life

Hines was dating the Irish actress Gemma Craven . The couple split and Hines began a relationship with world ski champion Liz Hobbs. In 1999 Frazer Hines learned that he was suffering from colon cancer. Doctors gave him a 25 percent chance of recovery. In order not to be pitied, Hines initially kept this diagnosis a secret from the public. As he expected to die of cancer, he decided not to have children, a decision that he later deeply regretted. His relationship with Liz Hobbs also ended in 2003. In 2010, Hines got word that he had overcome cancer. Hines currently lives in Nottingham .
