Cyril Leonard Shaps (born October 13, 1923 in Highbury , London , † January 1, 2003 in Harrow on the Hill , Middlesex ) was a British actor .
Life
Shaps was in London's East End , the son of one of Poland originating Jewish tailor born. At the age of twelve, Shaps took courses at the London Broadcasting School and worked in commercials for the food brands O.L. Sauce and Quaker Oats on Radio Lyons and Radio Luxembourg on the radio . Though he has always wanted to be an actor, he first worked as a clerk at the London County Council Ambulance Service and taught drama, music and singing with the Royal Army Education Corps . After retiring from the army, he received a scholarship to train acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London in 1947 . He worked two years as a producer and announcer for the English language radio station Radio Holland in the Netherlands before returning to the UK.
He made his stage actor debut in Guildford in a production for the BBC Radio Repertory Company . From 1952 to 1954 he appeared regularly on the BBC Radio Repertory Company . He participated in numerous radio productions of theater plays, where he often played old men and priests, including as old servant Firs in The Cherry Orchard , as Justice of the Peace Shallow in Henry IV , as Brother Lorenzo in Romeo and Juliet , as Polonius in Hamlet and as Canon Chasuble in The Importance of Being Earnest .
Shaps also worked in film and television since the 1950s . Due to his small body size and his round face, he was used almost exclusively as a character actor and in prominent supporting roles ; a genre of roles to which he remained loyal for over 50 years. He played the bartender in the officers' club in the epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962), the neighbor Mr. Pinkus in the social drama Challenged (1967) and the scientist Dr. Bechmann in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). In 1977 he played the father of a demon- possessed boy in the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth , directed by Franco Zeffirelli . In 1978 he played the Bremen- born concentration camp inmate Weinberg in the miniseries Holocaust - The Story of the Weiss Family . In 1994 he took on the role of the weird royal court doctor and personal physician in the British comedy King George - A Kingdom for More Mind. Lucas Pepys (who “found the stool more eloquent than the pulse” ) is obsessed with investigating the causes of the discoloration of the royal stool and urine . Shaps had previously played this role from 1992 to 1994 in the play What, What or the Illness of King George III by Alan Bennett at the National Theater in London. Shaps last achieved an intense role portrait in 2002 as a concentration camp victim and old Jew at the assembly point in the Holocaust film The Pianist .
Shaps has also appeared on numerous British television series . His role as the Portuguese wine merchant Señor Braganza in the television series The Onedin Line is particularly remembered .
