Being Earnest ( The Importance of Being Earnest ) is an American-British-French film comedy by Oliver Parker from the year 2002 . The plot is based on the play The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde .

action

Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing live in Victorian England .

Worthing resides in the country and keeps going to London for pleasure . Every time he tells his surroundings that he is taking care of his irresponsible brother Ernst. But it is he who pretends to be serious in London in order to pursue his pleasure unrecognized. Moncrieff is a London aristocrat who from time to time escapes London society by pretending to be visiting his sick friend Bunbury in the country, but who is also an invention.

Worthing and Moncrieff became friends in London, where Worthing met Moncrieff's cousin Gwendolin Fairfax and fell in love with her. A marriage seems impossible because Gwendolin's mother, Lady Bracknell, is against this connection. Gwendolin also cares a lot about the name Ernst, because supposedly she can only love a man with that name. Worthing's accounts of his ward Cecily arouse Moncrieff's interest in her.

Moncrieff drives to Worthing's country house, where he poses as his brother Ernst. He falls in love with Cecily, who has always wanted to marry the irresponsible Uncle Ernst. Worthing also appears at his country house and both play (partly out of necessity) the comedy of the brother who has reappeared until Gwendolin escapes from her strict parents' house. Both women find out that no one is really serious and then withdraw offended. The two men vie for the favor of their loved ones and seem to be successful until Lady Bracknell shows up.

Finally it turns out that Worthing is a brother of Moncrieff who was missing as a child and nothing stands in the way of the wedding of the two couples. Worthing also clarifies the name question for himself, since he takes the name of his real father, who was supposedly Ernst.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the greatest pleasure - as in every film adaptation of the play - was the dialogues. The director and screenwriter deviated from the original in places, but the spirit was preserved. The story is "poor", the characters "simple". Rupert Everett looks "charming" and "charismatic", Frances O'Connor looks "charming". Reese Witherspoon had "small difficulties" with the portrayal of a role set in the 19th century.

The lexicon of international film wrote: “Lightweight salon comedy based on the play by Oscar Wilde, carried by brilliant actors and quick-witted dialogues. The smugly designed characters do not develop any particular depth, so that the highly entertaining pace covers the social criticism inherent in the piece. "

Awards

Reese Witherspoon was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2002. In 2003 Maurizio Millenotti won the Nastro d'Argento des Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani for costumes .
