Bernard Cribbins OBE (born December 29, 1928 in Oldham , Lancashire , England ) is a British actor .

Life

At the age of 13, Cribbins was the assistant to the stage manager at a local theater. After finishing school he served in the airborne troops of the British Parachute Regiment . After initially appearing at the theater in his hometown, he received his first engagement in 1956 in London's West End in a production of The Comedy of Errors . In the same year he began his television career with the portrayal of Thomas Traddles in a television adaptation of David Copperfield after Charles Dickens . He recorded one of the tracks from the West End revue An 'Another Thing as a single in 1960 , The Folk Song reached position 66 in the British singles chart . In 1962, three more of his singles reached the UK charts, with Hole in the Ground and Right Said Fred placing in the top 10. The latter title was later eponymous for the band of the same name .

Cribbins made appearances in various British film comedies in the 1960s , including in Even the little ones want to go up and Casino Royale alongside Peter Sellers, as well as in three films in the Carry-on… film series . He also played in the feature film version of the television series Doctor Who with Peter Cushing in the title role. In Great Britain, Cribbins is also known as a voice actor, especially through his narrative role in the puppet series Die Wombles , which was spoken in the German adaptation by Dieter Hallervorden . He appeared in guest roles in various television series and also worked as a narrator for radio productions for the BBC . From 1969 to 1970 he had his own personality show on British television and between 1966 and 1991 he was one of the storytellers on the children's program Jackanory , in which Peter Sellers and Prince Charles read aloud. With 111 episodes, Cribbins was the most frequently used narrator, he read from Alice in Wonderland , The Hobbit and The Wizard of Oz , among others .

From 2007 to 2010 he played the recurring role of grandfather Wilfred Mott in ten episodes of the reissued science fiction series Doctor Who . Cribbins is still active in old age, with guest roles in well-known series such as Inspector Barnaby and the lead role in the children's series Old Jack's Boat between 2013 and 2015.

Cribbins has been married since 1955 and has two children.
