Tate began her acting career with roles in British crime series such as The Bill and London's Burning . She started doing stand-up comedy in 1996 and appeared at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2000 and 2001, where she was discovered by a casting director. She subsequently got the lead role in the British sitcom Wild West alongside Dawn French .

Tate appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company in a 2000 production of A Servant to Two Masters and The Way of the World at the National Theater .

In 2004 Tate got her own comedy series, the Catherine Tate Show , which ran for three successful seasons. In the show, Catherine Tate plays several different characters such as Chav teenage Lauren Cooper or Joannie Taylor, the grandmother with the dirty mouth. Tate won the British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Newcomer, received a BAFTA nomination, and appeared as Lauren Cooper on the annual BBC Comic Relief . For her performance in the second season of the Catherine Tate Show , Tate won a British Comedy Award for "Best British Comedy Actress".

2005 Catherine Tate return to the theater back to next Friends actor David Schwimmer in London's West End the play Some Girls perform.

The third season of the Catherine Tate Show aired in 2006 and won the UK's National Television Award for Most Popular Comedy. Tate's catchphrase "Am I bovvered?" ( Bovvered , [bɒvəɻɘ: d] reflects the Cockney pronunciation of bothered [bɒðəd] ( RP - sociolect ) and means something like: "Who cares?" Or "Does it itch / do I care? "), Used by her character Lauren Cooper on the show, was so popular that" bovvered "was voted British" Word of the Year "and even received an entry in the Oxford English Dictionary . She received a total of four BAFTA Award nominations for her performance on the Catherine Tate Show .

In 2006, she played Donna Noble , the companion of the 10th Doctor , in the Doctor Who Christmas special The Runaway Bride . She then had several roles in British movies such as Starter for 10 , Sixty Six and Scenes of a Sexual Nature . She later starred in Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution and Love and Other Disasters .

In 2008, Tate returned to Doctor Who to play the role of Donna Noble alongside David Tennant for the entire fourth season. At the TV Quick Awards 2008 she received the award for best actress and at the British National Television Awards she was nominated in the category "Outstanding Drama Performance", but here her co-star David Tennant won. Since Tennant was on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Theater during the awards ceremony , Tate accepted the award for him. During the break in the RSC production of Hamlet , Tennant was tuned in live and gave a short eulogy for Catherine Tate.

During the rehearsals for the play Under the Blue Sky 2008 at the Duke of York's Theater in London, Tate injured his ankle and appeared in the first appearances with crutches. In 2010 Tate starred in a series of comedy shorts called Little Crackers , which made her directorial debut. She also appeared in the play Season's Greetings . In the film Gulliver's Travels - Something Big Comes Our Way , she plays Queen Isabelle.

In the official music video for "Happy Now" ( Progress ) by Take That , which was shown as a comic relief sketch on Red Nose Day 2011 for the first time, she was a member of the tribute band "Fake That", together with the British Comedians Alan Carr , James Corden , John Bishop and David Walliams . Tate took on the role of Take That member Jason Orange , with whom she soon began a year-long relationship.

In the seventh season finale of the series Das Büro (American remake of The Office ), Tate played a guest role as possible successor to boss Michael Scott . She then got a permanent role for the last two seasons.

From May 16 to September 3, 2011 she appeared - again alongside David Tennant - in Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing at London's Wyndham's Theater . The production broke all sales records of the theater, which opened in 1899, and was described by critics as the “feel-good hit of the summer” and “Shakespeare with mind and heart”. Due to the great demand, the play was filmed and made available as a download.

Since Doctor Who , Tate has been a regular guest at international comic conventions such as the San Diego Comic-Con . Countless actors, authors, artists and filmmakers from all branches of the science fiction and / or fantasy genre come together there and present new and old works, as well as previews, autograph sessions and a large number of so-called panels where individual celebrities meet ask the fans' questions or share comedic anecdotes. Tate, who, in contrast to Doctor Who colleagues such as David Tennant , John Barrowman or Russell T. Davies, is not at home in the science fiction world according to her own statement, always jokingly fends off genre-related questions on the panels and increased it with the Attending the conventions, especially the international popularity of the Catherine Tate Show and especially the sketch figures Nan and Lauren Cooper ( "I ain't bovvered" ).

Private life

Tate has a daughter (* 2003) with theater manager Twig Clark. She was born through an emergency caesarean section. The family lived in Richmond, London with a cat and a dog, the latter a gift from their friend Jonathan Ross . Tate and Clark separated in 2011, their daughter growing up with Tate. From March 2011 onwards, Catherine Tate was dating Take-That member Jason Orange , and the two separated again in February 2012.

Tate suffered from postnatal depression (PPD) for nearly two years following the birth of their daughter . Occasionally, she has panic attacks and relapses of depression. Basically she struggles with depressive moods: "I'm an incredibly negative person, so any form of success is only ever going to be a relief to me and set my default position back to neutral". All of these factors are considered to be risk factors for PPD. She speaks openly about it in order to contribute to destigmatization.

Tate has been the patron of the theater group Theatretrain and the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust since August 2006. In 2011, she helped design the new charity calendar for the Cancer Aid Foundation. She speaks French fluently.
