The Office is a British comedy television series written and directed by Ricky Gervais , who also starred, and Stephen Merchant . It premiered in the UK on August 30, 2001 on BBC Two . The German first broadcast took place on June 10, 2006 on Sat.1 Comedy . In 2001 and 2002 a season with six episodes each and in 2003 a Christmas special with two episodes were broadcast.
The series has been produced in the style of a long-term documentary with which a fictional BBC team wants to document life in an open- plan office of the paper wholesaler Wernham Hogg in Slough . Scenes from everyday office life alternate with "individual interviews" with the main actors.
main characters
David Brent
David Brent (played by Ricky Gervais ) is the head of the office, who grossly overestimates his qualities as a leader and entertainer. In particular, the contradiction between his jokes and political correctness brings him down repeatedly.
Gareth Keenan
Gareth Keenan (played by Mackenzie Crook ) is David's assistant. Because of his membership in the Territorial Army , he likes to portray himself as a militarily experienced leader. This also becomes the basis of Tim and Dawn's jokes, which are mostly peppered with homosexual innuendos.
Tim Canterbury
Tim Canterbury (played by Martin Freeman ) is a frustrated clerk who tries to escape the monotony of his work by joking and flirting with Dawn, with whom he is unhappily in love. However, he does not manage to overcome obstacles, be it in his repeatedly postponed project to study psychology, be it in his relationship with Dawn.
Dawn Tinsley
Dawn Tinsley (played by Lucy Davis ) is a receptionist. She has been engaged to the warehouse worker Lee for years, feels drawn to Tim, but holds on to their existing relationship when in doubt. She has largely given up her dream of working as an illustrator.
Jennifer Taylor-Clark
Jennifer Taylor-Clark (played by Stirling Gallacher) is David Brent's manager, who is amused and disgusted by his management style .
Neil Godwin
Neil Godwin (played by Patrick Baladi ) is first David Brent's (never-to-be-seen) counterpart in another Wernham Hogg branch, then his manager. He is the target of David's envy, especially as Neil far surpasses him in attractiveness, leadership, popularity and humor.
Chris "Finchy" Finch
Chris "Finchy" Finch (played by Ralph Ineson ) is a sales representative, womanizer and master of telling dirty jokes, buddy and unmatched role model of David Brent.
Keith "Big Keith" Bishop
Keith "Big Keith" Bishop (played by Ewen MacIntosh) is a plump, taciturn accountant with a penchant for Scottish eggs .

A total of 46 episodes were produced in five seasons. After the BBC recognized the similarities with The Office in October 2004 and reserved the right to take legal action, Brainpool expanded the credits for the second season in September 2005 with the addition: "Inspired by the UK BBC series The Office created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant" .
The office
After the British original series won two Golden Globes, an American version of The Office was produced under the same original title, which NBC bought. The title was retained, the venue moved from Slough to Scranton , Pennsylvania . NBC described it as a slightly faster version of the original. The creators of the original series Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had a say, but were not otherwise involved. In German-speaking countries, the series was shown under the name Das Büro on ORF 1 and Super RTL and as The Office on RTL NITRO and Comedy Central.
Le Bureau
The French version of The Office was launched in France on May 25, 2006 .
La job
The Québec broadcaster Bell ExpressVu has been broadcasting a French-language version of the series that is set in the Montreal area since October 9, 2006 .
