Uddingston is a village in the north-west of the Scottish Council Area South Lanarkshire or in the traditional county of Lanarkshire . It is located around ten kilometers southeast of central Glasgow on the right bank of the Clyde . The surrounding towns include Viewpark , Bothwell and Bellshill .
history
Uddingston developed from the 18th century. The village had market rights and, due to its location in the Glasgow area, was the residence of merchants. Furthermore, coal was mined in Uddingston.
traffic
In the past, two major roads crossed in Uddingston. The intersection contributed significantly to the development of the village. From 1787 on, the carriage route between Glasgow and Carlisle led over the nearby Bothwell Bridge . Today the A721 , A723 , A724 and A725 are within a few kilometers . The M74 touches Uddingston in the north and east.
In the late 1840s, Uddingston received a station on the Caledonian Railway . For this purpose, the Uddingston Viaduct was built over the Clyde, which is now part of the West Coast Main Line between Glasgow and London . The station is still operated as a local transport stop today. Uddingston Cross Station was once the southeastern terminus of Glasgow's electrified tram network.
