Stuart Burrows (born February 7, 1933 in Cilfynydd ) is a Welsh opera singer with a lyric tenor voice .

Career

Stuart Burrows was born in the south of Wales. He first worked as a teacher in the city of Bargoed . After winning the Welsh National Eisteddfod Award in 1954, he studied singing at Trinity College, University of Wales, Carmarthen . He made his operatic debut in Cardiff in 1963 as Ismail in Verdi's Nabucco with the Welsh National Opera Company . He then sang the roles of Rodolfo in La Bohème , Macduff in Macbeth , Duke in Rigoletto and Ernesto in Don Pasquale . In 1965 he was invited by Igor Stravinsky to Athens to perform Oedipus Rex , where he sang the title role. This was followed by engagements at the Royal Opera House in London, where he made his debut as Beppe in Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci . In London he then sang Fenton in Verdi's lyrical comedy Falstaff , Tamino in Mozart's Magic Flute , Elvino in La sonnambula , Lenski in Eugene Onegin, Alfredo in La traviata and the title roles in Mozart's Idomeneo and Gounod's Faust .

That was the start of his international career. In the following years he had engagements at all major opera stages in Europe and America. In 1967 he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera in Mozart's Magic Flute in the role of Tamino, which would become one of his star roles. In March 1970 he had his first appearance at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires , where he sang Hoffman in Hoffmann's Tales under the direction of Peter Maag . He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1970 as Tamino. In the same year he sang Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni in Vienna and at the Salzburg Festival under the direction of Herbert von Karajan . He made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Faust in Berlioz 's opera La damnation de Faust .

His collaboration with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden lasted 25 years, he was engaged at the Met for 12 seasons in a row .

His repertoire included works by Adams, Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Handel, Mallote, Massenet, Offenbach, Schubert, Sullivan, Tippett and Tchaikovsky. Burrows enjoyed worldwide recognition as a Mozart singer and interpreter of lyrical tenor roles in operas by Puccini , Verdi , Donizetti and Bellini .

Stuart Burrows International Voice Award

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has hosted the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award since 2006 . The competition was set up in honor of Burrow to promote young singers and is endowed with a total of £ 5,000, of which £ 4,000 goes to the winner. The competition is advertised internationally, the age limit for participants is 35 years.
