Julius Rudel (born March 6, 1921 in Vienna - † June 26, 2014 in New York City ) was an American conductor of Austrian origin who was artistic director of the New York City Opera from 1957 to 1979 .

biography

Julius Rudel began his musical education at the Musikhochschule Wien , after the annexation of Austria in 1938 his family emigrated with him to the United States, where he continued his studies at the Mannes College of Music in New York.

In 1943 he became choir director at the New York City Opera and gave the following year there as a conductor with The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss made his debut. He was the artistic director of the theater from 1957 to 1979. He studied a wide repertoire there, from Claudio Monteverdi to Leoš Janáček .

At the same time he was artistic director of the Caramoor Festival in New York State from 1962 to 1976 and first music director of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC

Rudel died at his Manhattan home in June 2014 at the age of 93 .
