Frederica von Stade
Frederica von Stade (born June 1, 1945 in Somerville , New Jersey ) is an American opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).
Life
Frederica von Stade, called "Flicka" within the family, studied at the Mannes College of Music in New York . In 1970 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera . A year later she sang Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro in the Santa Fe Opera in a joint stage debut with Kiri Te Kanawa as Countess. Over the next few years, Frederica von Stade sang on every major opera stage in the world. She sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at the Opening Ceremony of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (2002) .
She was married to Peter K. Elkus , who also trained her and therefore, after the divorce, demanded appropriate compensation for the market value gain his wife had achieved by putting his own career behind. The Elkus versus Elkus case is often taught as a first-year case study at American law schools.
