The Santa Fe Opera (SFO) is an American opera company whose opera house is 7 km north of Santa Fe in the state of New Mexico .

history

The conductor John Crosby from Bronxville / New York founded the SFO in 1956 originally as the Opera Association of New Mexico . His goal was to give American singers the opportunity to rehearse new roles and to allow enough time for rehearsals and rehearsals. The institution's first season began on July 3, 1957.

Crosby remained as General Director until 2000, the longest time as director in US operatic history. Richard Gaddes followed him as General Manager from 2000 to 2008.

Conception and organizational idea

From the beginning, certain basic lines of what has remained valid until today were established. Every year from the end of June or the beginning of July until the third week of August, five operas are presented in a rotating repertoire. For example, the singers act both as a choir for each opera and as extras.

The now newly built theater was designed by the Santa Fe company McHugh and Kidder. One of its main features was the partial opening of the roof towards the center of the orchestra.
