The Arboretum Wildeshausen is an approximately 3.5  hectare , freely accessible arboretum in Wildeshausen . It connects the city center with the Lehmkuhle educational forest trail and the Pestrup burial ground (hiking trail no.3 ).

history

In 1998 a license agreement was signed between the city and the local Rotary Club for the purpose of creating an arboretum on a compensation area in the area of the development plan 34 "Lehmkuhlenweg" with two rainwater retention basins on the southern ring of the city of Wildeshausen for an initial 25 years and extended in 2012 for a further 30 years. The area also serves to compensate for interventions in nature through construction activities in the neighboring residential area. On May 18, 2014, as part of an “open door” day, a parking lot for passenger vehicles and buses, which had been created by the local Rotary Club , was inaugurated directly on the Südring in Wildeshausen .

Refuge in the arboretum

With around 120 trees, two flood polders and an orchard meadow , a biological diversity is offered. 3000 shrubs subdivide the area and delimit it from the outside.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Rotary Club, several thousand daffodils were planted in 2012 as part of the “Lovable City” project. They should gradually run wild.

For the animal world there are insect hotels, nesting boxes and beehives. A refuge was built as part of a care measure for juvenile offenders.

In the middle of the area, some 150 year old oak trunks show the cycle of trees from planting to the end.

In addition to native trees such as oak , beech , linden and maple, there are varieties from other parts of the world. Some are closely related to the local species. Others are unique in this place, such as the cake tree and the sequoia tree .

Planning

Further trees, bushes, flowers and benches for a “Park of the Future” are planned, as are themed paths: a “Nibble Path” with berry bushes and other delicacies or a “Bare Feet Path” with different flooring materials, as well as access to the water basin to set up a bank there.
