The Uddingston Viaduct is a railway bridge in the Scottish town of Uddingston in the council area of South Lanarkshire . In 1973 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

Construction of the first viaduct began in May 1846 and was completed in October 1848. It was the earliest viaduct on the Caledonian Railway over the Clyde . In 1903 a second bridge was added to the north side of the bridge. In 1967 the superstructure of the older bridge was dismantled, so that today only the arches and pillars that it shares with the newer bridge are preserved. The Uddingston Viaduct is part of the West Coast Main Line network between Glasgow or Edinburgh and London . In 1993 the viaduct was placed on the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. Its condition was classified as poor with moderate endangerment in 2013.

description

The bridge leads the railway line on the western edge of Uddingston over the Clyde. Just a few kilometers upriver is the Bothwell Bridge, another listed bridge. The cast iron arches of the three-arched viaduct are made with open frameworks. They rest on pillars made of embossed red sandstone blocks with rounded icebreakers and ledges . On the west side, two narrow, brick-lined round arches on the slope lead to the bridge. The newer bridge, however, is a lattice girder bridge , which is also made of cast iron.
