Naval Cadet Institute Berlin

The Berlin Naval Cadet Institute was the school for Prussian naval cadets from 1855 to 1866.

history

The provisional naval school in Danzig was relocated to Prussia's capital Berlin on October 1, 1855. The inland situation was not considered to be disadvantageous because the cadets went to sea in summer and only stayed at the institute in winter. The property was bought by Giacomo Meyerbeer near the later Kroll Opera House . There happened to be a small observatory in the villa . There was a sandy parade ground by the property .

The house was set up for around 40–50 pupils. The inspection officers also lived there. The building was connected to the gas works, but had no water supply. The institute was to "give the volunteer cadets entering the Royal Navy the training required by the service of a lieutenant at sea and which enables them to pursue their further training through self-study and through the practice of service". Some of the institute's students were so young that they were confirmed during their training . Prince Adalbert personally took care of the training . He made the directorate of the institute "repeatedly aware that despite all the importance of theoretical education, practical training must always remain the main thing".

The first and only director of the Naval Cadet Institute was F. Baron Haller von Hallerstein , when he took office (1855) Major à la suite of the Sea Battalion, at the end (1866) Colonel à la suite of the same troop. His special inclination was mathematics. A naval officer, Lieutenant zur See 2nd class Lehmann, was added to the baron as “first officer” and advisor. Inspection officers were assigned to supervise and guide the cadets - a term that remained in use until March 1922. The faculty consisted of 20 officers and scholars. A boatswain was commanded to assist in nautical handicrafts . Christian Amynt Liebe taught artillery and fortification. Instruction in the institute was given in four coetus . From 1859 one or the other ship was kept in service throughout the winter. It was made a special duty of the teachers to pay attention to the later position of the cadets as officers when teaching. The (older) pupils of the 4th Coetus should only be given any reprimands after the end of the class in private. The pupils were to be addressed by their rank and name.

The tasks of the institute expanded so quickly that they had to move after only two years. In 1857, the property at Matthäikirchstrasse No. 9 was rented. A sports field was obtained by leasing the adjacent gardens. House No. 9 was demolished at the end of the 19th century.
