action

Ingrid Cortez puts her children to bed and Carmen wants to hear a bedtime story . The mother tells her children the story of two secret agents who were set on each other and could not get rid of the other. They fell in love and soon got married. Their wedding celebration was severely disrupted and they had to flee. Together they offered a seductive target for their enemies. Helicopters sped over the wedding party, and no sooner had the two agents in love said yes than they had to jump over the cliff with heart-shaped parachutes, and a boat was already waiting for them below. They went into hiding and devoted themselves to their families. When they had children, they wanted to quit their jobs.

The children like the story very much and finally the mother goes out. What the children do not know is that their parents are the mysterious secret agents in love who wanted to retire. The plan has remained, they are still active, but they only take on an advisory role. The next morning, little June watches his favorite series about Fegan Floop and his Fooglies, a psychedelic Teletubbie blend . Outside of its series, this Fegan Floop has a large artificial island in the middle of the sea. There's a man from the - probably American - military right there. Mr. Lisp has invested a billion dollars in the development of Fegan Floop so far and he is very disappointed with the results so far. Floop was to design and manufacture combat robots for the military. The successes so far are the Fooglies, who are actually mutated secret agents of the OSS, the same organization to which Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez also belong. Floop has also developed super-thumbs, super-human-sized robots whose head and limbs are thumbs. Mr. Lisp gives Floop an ultimatum, he wants to see success immediately. Floop and his assistant Alexander Minion show him the latest development of their combat robots. A little boy comes running into the room. It appears to be Mr. Lisp's son. But it is a dwarf robot in the form of a child. These are supposed to be the perfect spies, because who cares about children? They are the Spy Kids.

In the house of the Cortez family there was soon an emergency, the father - Gregorio Cortez - wants to take on an assignment that involves his colleagues who have disappeared. But his wife wants to accompany him. She manages to persuade him to get back into action together. It can be flattened and you are already out and about in your family car, which turns into a submarine. They are in flight to dive station. But they don't get far, Fegan Floop chases them and catches them too.

The parents arranged for Uncle Felix to take care of the children. Felix is also an agent and should protect the family over the years. He takes care of the children, and the next morning Red Alert flashes in the alarm clock and shines down on Uncle Felix , who is sleeping on the couch , from the televisions and monitors . Super-Thumbs attack them, and Felix Gumm has to fight them so that the children can escape. You start with an amphibious vehicle. Your goal is the safe house . They arrive after a few hours, but the house denies them entry and requires them to give their names. The girl calls her name Carmen , but the house says, “Your full name.” Her name is the password: Carmen Elizabeth Juanita Echo Sky Brava Cortez. (June is actually called June Rocky Razor Rabble Cortez) You look around the house and find things like the rehydrator, which makes cheeseburgers with fries and ketchup out of small, unsavory, shrink-wrapped food rations . (It seems to be a McDonald’s menu.) But June is not hungry, he is afraid for his parents. The children don't mind that they were lied to.

Trapped in Floop's crazy lock, Gregorio and Ingrid manage to break free with a laser in Ingrid's ring. They discuss whether their children are in danger. Ingrid thinks they can do it, while Gregorio says otherwise, as one of them is still wearing diapers. There are always relaxed slapstick interludes. For example, when they try to flee, the ground below them dissolves into gigantic puzzle pieces that fall into the sea. Gregorio has to get started to jump over the abyss. He doesn't make it and lands on his stomach on a glass shelf. In the meantime, Ms. Gradenko comes to the secret house. The children learn why they are being hunted. It's about an invention of her father. "The third brain" is a small computer that can give a robot a particularly high level of intelligence. Floop needs the brain for his army of spy kids . Ms. Gradenko asks the children where the invention is, but the children don't know. Gradenko is playing for time, because their super thumbs are on their heels again. Juni unintentionally finds the "third brain", which is followed by a turbulent jet-pack chase. Juni and Carmen escape, Ms. Gradenko's hair is largely scorched by an uncontrolled jetpack. The children end up in a supermarket, hide and change clothes, now that they are secret agents on a mission to save their parents.

Fegan Floop is looking for the last component that would help his show to perfection, he just wants to put his show on the first place. His assistant Alexander Minion has a different goal, he wants to rule the world with the robot army of the Spy Kids. Now he's sending Carmen and June androids to steal the ominous brains from the real kids. In fact, the brain's development team had been ordered to destroy it; it had been determined to be too dangerous. But Gregorio kept it.

The children turn to Isidoro Machete Cortez, their real uncle, their father's brother , after a fight with their robot twins on a playground in which their "third brain" was removed . Minion takes the lead in Floop's secret quarters, he now has the third brain and no longer needs Fegan Floop. He locks the presenter of the popular children's program in the virtual room in which the program is produced. Mr. Lisp is on his way to see results and is met by Minion and the almost bald disfigured Ms. Gradenko.

Machete doesn't want to help the children, he develops the fantastic agent equipment for both sides and is in conflict with his brother. At night the children help themselves from Machete's laboratory and fly to Floops Island on a small plane. There, brain production is in full swing. On the plane there is an argument because Carmen, like so often, beats her brother down. He takes revenge for all these years of insulting with diaper aunt . It was a well-kept secret between Carmen and her parents that she still needed diapers, but June has known for a long time. She becomes enraged and kicks him against the controls. The children lose control of the plane and have to jump off. They dive, get into the castle from the sea and incapacitate the guards - super thumbs - with electroshock chewing gum and electric shock soap bubbles. The children now want to get into the dungeon where their parents are staying. Her father has already become one of the Fooglies, he has mutated into a child-like drawing by June. Her mother is still okay, however, and so they free her. Together with Fegan Floop, they manage to transform their father back and overpower Alexander Minion. They're trying to turn him into a fooglie. But Ms. Gradenko can cancel this process so that it is only partially mutated. Juni and Carmen have to fight the robots again, but this time it's a new version, much stronger and smarter.

The Cortez family meets Minion and Mr. Lisp, and Minion wants to demonstrate his new smart robots to the family. The Cortez family is faced with a 500-strong Spy Kids army. The father assigns 100 spy kids to each family member. June notices that they are not enough. At that moment, Uncle Isidoro, called Machete, joins them after all. But there is no fight because Floop manages to reprogram the Spy-Kids.

At home, the whole family is together at breakfast, and machete is with them too. Little June, who is no longer afraid and gets on well with his sister, is watching TV again. Fegan Floop had to revise his show a little. He has now added the two robot clones of the Cortez children to his program, and there is only one Fooglie - Minion left. On the news, you can see the super kids, the former Spy Kids, doing good deeds. The program changes and Devlin, the OSS boss, has a new assignment - for the children. But it is made clear to him that the spy family can only be booked in full. Carmen says: “Espionage is easy. Keeping a family together is difficult, and this mission is worth fighting for. "

criticism

“Turbulent, over-the-top as well as intelligent parody of agents that juggles with the set pieces of the genre and at the same time ironically questions the modern fun society. The theme of the rapprochement between the world of children and adults also has an appealing effect. "

“Basically, 'Spy Kids' is a James Bond variant for children - a spy story packed with fast-paced action, deliberately over-the-top, enriched with brightly colored special effects. The story of the two smart siblings is geared towards the target group of young visitors, who can follow the course of action well. The little ones will be really impressed by the imaginative, funny action scenes. Mini-submarines, turbo-planes and soap-bubble stun guns are part of the equipment of the young spies. The childish booth magic that Rodriguez creates on the screen, however, also harbors a danger: it gets more or less on the nerves of the adults, depending on the expression of the child's mood. As compensation, the Texan garnishes his adventure with guest appearances by stars like Cheech Marin ('Cheech & Chong'), Danny Trejo ('Heat'), George Clooney ('The Storm') and independent director Richard Linklater ('Slackers').
