Big wreck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Big Wreck is a Canadian rock band that formed in the late 1990s.

Lead singer Ian Thornley, guitarist Brian Doherty, bassist Dave Henning, and drummer Forrest Williams founded Big Wreck in Boston , Massachusetts in 1994 during their student days at Berklee College of Music . After many smaller appearances in Boston and Cambridge , they signed with a major label and then released their debut album In Loving Memory Of ... in 1997 . The single The Oaf was in the top 10 of the American charts and was a huge hit for the band. Other single releases could not build on the success of The Oaf in the USA . In return, Big Wreck was able to show further successes in Canada with the previously failed USA singles and landed more top 10 hits.

In October 2001, Big Wreck played at Roy Thomson Hall with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra , the Uzume Taiko Ensemble Drummers, and Paul Langlois and Rob Baker (both of The Tragically Hip ).

The band's second album, The Pleasure and the Greed , was released in 2001. It received little commercial attention due to poor marketing in the US and Canada. The band split up just a year later.

Ian Thornley returned to Toronto and formed the band Thornley. Guitarist Brian Doherty lived in Camlachie, a small community near Sarnia , Ontario , and worked as a guitar teacher for children. Doherty was also a member of the indie band Death of 8. Bassist Dave Henning and drummer Forrest Williams initially did not pursue any musical engagements.

In 2010 the band reunited with a new line-up, without Henning and Williams. In addition to Thornley and Doherty, Paulo Neta was joined by a third guitarist who stayed with the band until 2017.

The first new single, Albatross , was released in 2011 and the album of the same name in the following year. In 2014, the Canadians followed up with their fourth studio album, Ghosts . The fifth studio album Grace Street was released on February 3, 2017.

On February 22, 2019, Big Wreck released a single from their new album, But For the Sun , with Locomotive . Ian Thornley also mentioned other titles: Follow Me , Put On a Smile , and Found My Place . The album was released on August 30, 2019.

Guitarist Brian Doherty died of cancer on June 5, 2019. He was 51 years old.

Despite this tragic loss, Big Wreck went on tour through Canada and the USA. Chris Caddell, who otherwise also plays in the backing band of Sass Jordan and in his own band called The Wreckage , was hired as the second guitarist .
