Breakaway (English for: " break out ") is the second studio album by American singer Kelly Clarkson . Musically, after breaking up with the producers of the television show American Idol , Clarkson movedaway from her R'n'B- heavy debut and towards pop rock , which has often been compared to Avril Lavigne in the reviews.

It was first released in the United States on November 30, 2004. In Germany it was released on August 1, 2005. The album was awarded a Grammy .

Germany

In Germany, Breakaway was only released in August 2005, due to the not so great success of the previous album Thankful , which did not even reach the top 100 of the German album charts. The album went straight to the top 20 due to the pre-release Since U Been Gone , which was Kelly Clarkson's first hit. The album kept falling after almost reaching the top 10. Even the second single Behind These Hazel Eyes couldn't prevent the album from falling. Only with the third single Because of You and the appearance on the TV show Wetten, dass ..? the album even rose to the top 5 of the German album charts. The album went platinum in May 2006 . At the beginning of December 2006 Breakaway was awarded 3 gold medals.

United States

Unlike in Germany, the second album was an instant hit in the USA. It stayed in the top 20 for over a year and was certified five times platinum . On November 1, 2006, Billboard confirmed that Breakaway had been in the American album charts for 100 weeks. In November 2006, Breakaway was certified six times platinum. It was the 10th best-selling album in 2006 with nearly two million copies sold.

Behind These Hazel Eyes is one of 6 songs Kelly Clarkson co-wrote. With the song she stayed in the US for 5 weeks in the top 20. The song stayed on the 1 of the TRL charts for 33 days, which no singer before her achieved.

Because of you

With the song, Clarkson processes her parents' divorce. She wrote the song when she was sixteen. The melody was contributed by Ben Moody , lead guitarist of the band We Are the Fallen and formerly with Evanescence . To this day, Because of You is Kelly Clarkson's most successful single in Germany. Clarkson reached number 1 in the German radio charts for the first time with Because of You . Not least thanks to appearances at Wetten, dass ..? , Top of the Pops , as well as the Echos , Clarkson was able to land one of the most successful songs in 2006.

The text looks sad because of the verbs and adjectives used for the text. So in the lyrics of the song there are words like dying , fearful and crying . The song is also about pain, which Clarkson describes as follows:

The video was shot in Los Angeles by Vadim Perelman . In the video, Kelly Clarkson, who is married and has one child in this game scene, is arguing with her husband. Suddenly the world stops and she takes a trip back in time to her childhood. She remembers how tough it was for her when her parents divorced. Clarkson accompanies her younger self in the video . In the end, she returns to the present and gets on with her husband.

Breakaway

The song was written by Avril Lavigne , among others . Breakaway was the first single on July 20, 2004 to be released in the US from the album of the same name, Breakaway . In Germany the song was the fourth single. There are two videos for the single. The one for Europe, which shows a concert by Clarkson on her world tour in Great Britain, and the video for the USA, which contains scenes from the movie Suddenly Princess 2 . The reason for the scenes in the US video is that Breakaway was the soundtrack for the film in the US. With Breakaway , Clarkson was able to reach number 1 in German airplays for a second time.

Walk away

Walk Away is the fifth and final single to be released from the Breakaway album . In Germany, the video celebrated its German premiere on VIVA on November 3rd . Walk Away was released internationally in the spring of 2006, but could not keep up with the success of the previous singles, which is why many ruled out a release in Germany.

Addicted

Many assumed that Addicted would be released, which it didn't. The reason the song was believed to be released was the US tour of the same name that took place in the summer of 2006. Allegedly, the record company's song was too similar to the singles Behind These Hazel Eyes and Because of You .
